Green Is Good Too
I never realized until little over a month ago exactly how harmful heavy metals could be. I’m not talking about music here, or the frying pan you wave at your husband when he comes home late. I’m talking about the metal byproducts that are a result of manufacturing.
In my town, we have a metal foundry. My brother works at it. After a couple of years, he started to have these awful symptoms. We thought he was going crazy. He took disability leave–it was that bad! Well, what we found out was that he had been working around copper, lead and other metals. I’m not sure if lead is a metal (don’t think so), but its toxicity is not limited to only children! We found out that my brother had lead poisoning!
His symptoms were so severe that it made me wonder about how other people who are exposed to minimal amounts of heavy metals (meaning, they don’t work around them all day) react to them. We all consume products that are made in these foundries, and there is certainly run-off that goes into our water supply. How can we protect ourselves?
Well, lobbying for greener business practices would be a start, but on a personal level, you can try
Chlorella, a supplement that is touted as being good for detox. Heavy metals are specifically mentioned! Besides helping to remove heavy metals, Chlorella has tons of antioxidants which besides contributing to a feeling of well-being, have been shown to prevent cancer.
This looks like a supplement I’d like to try. I’d like to get some for my brother as well, since he is still dealing with the effects of lead poisoning. Yes, green can definitely be good.

No commentsPink Cake
Of course, I love pink cake. The thing is, pink cake can be problematic. Some macho-type guys won’t be seen eating it, so it’s not always a good thing to take to work, unless you want to watch them suffer, of course! There’s a flip side to this male problem with pink cake, however. What do you do when your 10 year old requests a pink cake for his birthday? Or a teenager requests “strawberry” cake for his birthday at school?
Chocolate frosting comes in handy, since pink just looks too frou frou in these situations. Still, pink and brown are definite girl colors! Making the cake from scratch is one solution, because then, it could be a very pale, unobtrusive pink. I don’t know. I’m still pondering this one.

No commentsPink Tights
You know, thank goodness for opaque colored
Tights. If it weren’t for tights, I’d have to worry about the pasty pale white shade that my legs get during the winter, which isn’t at all attractive. Also, tights cover up a wide variety of problems, such as stubble, spider veins, scars and other leg-related things that keep you from looking sleek.
I love the tights that Hue carries. Why? They have them in a lot of colors! Of course, I’m sure that’s why they’re named Hue. Right now, you can get two pairs for $15, which is a sweet deal.
Tights are the only thing, in my opinion, that make it look okay for a woman who is fortyish to wear short skirts. I don’t mean mini-skirts, but fun flappy short skirts. Perhaps I should speak for myself. Tights are the only way that I feel comfortable wearing short skirts. You know, the aforementioned spider veins, pasty white legs and all that.
I just LOVE that Hue carries their opaque tights in PINK!! When it comes to clothes, I can be quite boring when it comes to color. Most of the core pieces of my wardrobe are black or brown. Accessories, however, are a totally different story. Bring on the pink! Pink purses are great. So is pink jewelry–my son bought me some serious pink bling for Christmas! Pink shoes have their place as well. I definitely consider tights to be an accessory. What a way to jazz up a so-so skirt!
Ah. What a lovely pink world.

No commentsHow Pink Will You Go?
As I’ve mentioned before, all of my electronics are pink. I also have a number of pink decor items. It is my goal to have a pink couch. Pink velvet, actually. And, I like pink lipstick, although I’m not sure that’s relevant to this discussion. So how much pink is too much pink? With lipstick, it’s kinda obvious. But with decor, how pink can you go before your house looks like a teenage girl’s? Not that there’s anything wrong with teenage girl pink–it’s just usually not considered high fashion.
I think the answer is varying the shades of pink and limiting the magenta to accent pieces. Pale pinks, mauves, dusty brownish pinks…all of these can look great, and give your room a nice pink glow without being, you know, TACKY.

No commentsUnlike Pink Lipstick, IRS Tax Debt Is Not Pretty
A couple of years ago, my husband and I had the hugest tax nightmare. We had accumulated
IRS Debt, courtesy of my husband not keeping track of his receipts from his business. Actually, to be fair, we lost the entire box of paperwork when we moved. We still don’t know where it is. So we were in a huge mess with this huge
irs tax debt to the tune of $17,000. It was awful.
We ended up going to a tax professional who was able to stop any IRS tax liens that we would have gotten, and have a bunch of the penalties removed, which saved us literally thousands of dollars. The professional that we worked with also worked it out with the IRS so that we could make payments every month. The debt became manageable, and we were able to pay off the remainder of what we owed fairly quickly.
I hate to think about what would have happened if we had tried to deal with all that ourselves. The average person, including me, doesn’t keep up with the myriad tax laws that keep changing course every year. We would probably still be accruing penalties and/or paying it off. I have a real “stick my head in the sand” mentality when confronted with confounding issues like messed up taxes. If you’re the same way, check out those links and don’t even bother trying to sort it all out yourself! You’ll just give yourself a headache and likely lose thousands of dollars. Seriously.
This year, I’m absolutely looking forward to a refund. Of course, the refund is already spent. But since I’m spending it on a Ph.D. and not a flat screen television, that’s okay, right? I wonder if they offer Ph.D’s in pink?

No commentsMy Favorite Pink Lipstick
I’ve got to get online and order my favorite pink lipstick, which is really not a lipstick at all, but a lip liner. I get my foundation, mascara and lip liner from Mary Kay, because I really like their colors. As far as eyeshadows and other makeup products go, I think they’re a little overpriced, and their eyeliner doesn’t stay on for five minutes, it seems. But the pink lip liner is great. Also, the “natural” lip liner is really pink, albeit a very soft pink. That’s my favorite one, actually. I’m also about out of foundation. I can’t imagine heading off to work without either, so it’s time to get ordering!
