Science: Pink and Red Hearts

Not all hearts are cute, but they certainly do serve an important purpose! We often lose sight of this purpose when we are downloading pink heart screensavers or whatever. Our real heart needs attention, too! I found a great resource for learning all about the heart, and the cool thing is, it has videos in both English and Spanish. I think it would be a great resource for work, because it includes videos on subjects such as how to use an
AED. This is part of a mandatory training at many workplaces, and I can see how this site would supplement that.

Also, these videos could come in handy in the classroom. Health class, biology…students definitely benefit from a more visual experience.

People who suffer from heart disease can learn more about their condition from watching these videos as well. So often, it seems as though doctors don’t really have the time to thoroughly explain to their patients in plain English what’s going on. Well, these videos appear to fill that gap! If you have heart disease, know someone with heart disease, or simply want to learn more about the heart, HeartLibrary.com is a site you’ll want to bookmark. Especially bookmark it if you’re an educator!

Pink Sacramento Sunsets

One of my nine-year-old’s favorite songs is California Dreamin’. Since one of my hobbies is checking out properties in fantasy places I’d like to live, I have to be especially careful not to let him see me on a site that I have reached by keying in a search term like
Sacramento Realtors. I love looking at houses, land, you name it. The photo is of a Sacramento sunset. How nice is that??

I’m sure the
Realtors in Sacramento just love people like me who cruise around their websites for the pleasure of looking at beautiful homes that I can’t afford. Anyway, I’m not planning on leaving Texas anytime soon! We have nice sunsets too!

10 Ways to Bring Nature Into Your Everyday Life

Nature is beautiful, right? Shouldn’t we try to bring more of it into our everyday lives? Here are some ideas that anyone can do. I am proud to say that I have tried all of them, and speak from personal experience.

    Photo: Andrew_N

    1. Open the window. Feel the breeze. Of course you’re also letting the wasps and mosquitoes fly in. Oh well, that just makes it a more authentic experience. Even better if you’ve got any driving rain, burglars, or a dumpster located nearby.

    2. Get some chickens for your backyard. If you get a rooster, it will have the added effect of bringing angry neighbors into your life, but that’s okay. You don’t want life to be dull. You’ll get eggs for free, that is, if the snakes they attract don’t eat them first.

    3. Grow some tomatoes on your patio. If you manage not to kill them, you will have the pride of serving something that you grew yourself. Notice that I did not say “for free”. By the time you buy the fancy dirt, fertilizer, stakes, baby plants, nets, cages, pots, etc., each tomato should cost about $4.21. Caution: Make sure you’re cat doesn’t think the tomato plant is its litterbox.

    4. Read about it. I’ve found that reading Thoreau’s Walden and other classics are more enjoyable than getting an asthma attack in an old moldy cabin that has spiders. Okay, I lied. I haven’t read (much) of Walden, but I have read Old Yeller. I love that story. Makes me want to go and make beef jerky out of something.

    5. Cook something that was once alive. These days, it’s pretty easy. Whether you’re grabbing some squash from the produce section or a hunk of dead cow from the freezer holding the brisket, you’re getting a little closer to nature. Throw away the Cheetos. It turns out they cause ADHD.

    6. Hang a picture on the wall that shows nature. It’s the ultimate safe way to observe bears.

    7. Pack a picnic. Make sure you don’t put any Cheetos in it or you may go crazy. Go to a park and enjoy the experience. Don’t let the bees, ants, wasps and myriad small children that will swarm around your food bother you. Work on achieving that state of Zen you’ve been striving for. The 102 degree heat will help you practice “living in a state of mindfulness”.

    8. Use sea salt. It brings the ocean right to your taste buds. (Hey, I should be writing ad copy!)

    9. Breathe. Air makes up a crucial part of the natural world. Breathe as much of it as you can.

    10. Get a pet. You will get to see where you stand in the pack (dog) or ponder whether or not your pet would eat you if you died and no one found the body for a few days (cat). Nothing brings you closer to nature than watching your dog eat cat turds, so perhaps get one of each.

There are many other ways you can enjoy nature on an everyday basis. Also, cutting a hole in your ceiling might bring in some nature as well, unless you live on the first floor of an apartment complex. Then everybody would have a surprise and there would be legal crap involved. So, you might want to stick with the ten I’ve mentioned above.

Unless you have something better…;-)
