The Most Versatile Flower? Roses.
Today, you can buy any kind of flower that you desire. Any far-fetched bloom that the love of your heart desires. Rare species from the Fiji Islands? No problem. The thing is, the most versatile flower of all can be purchased easily, and for the most part, inexpensively.
Want a unique flower? Roses provide that. Try buying a black one. Or not.
How about a perfumed flower? Roses certainly fit that bill, with their assertive fragrance.
A soft, silky flower? Roses are wonderful. How about sprinkling some petals in a bath, or a bed?
A traditional flower? Roses are appropriate for lovers, hospital patients, secretary’s day and funerals.
An edible flower? Roses are used to scent rice dishes and pastries, especially in the Middle East. Candied rose petals are also available.
A cryptic flower? The color of a rose can be used to send a message–just make sure the sender also speaks the language of flowers!
A poetic flower? Here’s an example by Emily Bronte:
It was a little budding rose,
Round like a fairy globe,
And shyly did its leaves unclose
Hid in their mossy robe,
But sweet was the slight and spicy smell
It breathed from its heart invisible…
A good friend of mine who is Hispanic refers to his mother as his desert rose. She does live in the desert, which makes it plausible. People of Middle Eastern decent also often describe women as desert roses. How romantic! Now that I’ve moved back to the woods of East Texas, I doubt I’ll ever earn that moniker, though. That’s fine, as long as the roses keep coming.
I have two favorite ways I like to receive roses.
The first one is the most obvious. The flower guy shows up at work with a huge bouquet of roses, parades them in front of everyone, and announces they are for me. There is a romantic note included. Even better, a cryptic note, saying only, “Your admirer.” What is it about women that we like to provoke envy in our peers? When we get a huge bouquet of roses, it looks as though we have it ALL.
The second way I like to get roses is one by one. This does not apply on my birthday or any major holiday. A red rose sitting on the seat of my car when I go to work in the morning. A single pink blossom amongst the mundane groceries that my lover has brought home. A wilted bloom bought from the flower (roses!) seller at a restaurant or nightclub.
I like to be the woman with the flower.
Did you know that the rose can be really exotic? Take rice pudding for example. It’s as plain of a dessert as it gets. Next time you make it, if you do that sort of thing, try adding a couple of tablespoons of rose water and a dash of cardamom for a delightful Turkish treat.
So, for a perfect evening with roses, you could present your beloved with a huge bouquet at work. Cook her dinner later on in the evening, and have a single flower by her plate. Then, you could take a bath together, with rose petals as the fragrance, of course. Finally, a path of rose petals would lead to the bed. For the rose lover, nothing could be more delightful!
Flowers. Rose. They absolutely go together!
