Pink Sapphires
I had no idea until this very moment, that sapphires came in all sorts of colors. Apparently, pink is one of them! You can find all kinds of pink sapphire rings out there, with diamonds or without. Here’s one I particularly like…
You know it is a beautiful stone when the diamonds take second stage! I’ve been thinking about getting one of those “raise your right hand” independent woman and all that rings, and if so, it will probably look quite a bit like this one, which costs about $2500 at the moment.
So I wonder if I can get my husband to buy me the right-hand ring? Heh.

No commentsI Like My Organic Beef Pink

I don’t eat very much meat. Most of the time, it just doesn’t appeal. But sometimes, I get this huge craving for a slab of beef, medium rare. Then we head off to the steakhouse and chow down. The thing is, though, I really hate how we raise beef in this country. The whole factory farming thing just stinks–literally. The cows are pumped full of hormones so that they will grow faster, and in the case of dairy cows, produce more milk. They are given tons of antibiotics so that the factory farmers can cram too many cows into a small space without them all getting sick. Worse, they give antibiotics to cows that are already sick–and this is the meat we are eating! Perhaps this is why it doesn’t appeal. I know too much about the industry.
Here in the boondocks where I live, ironically, there isn’t much opportunity to get
Natural Beef that is organic and humanely raised. The closest I’ve gotten is begging my friend who shot her steer to sell me a couple of pounds from her freezer. Her kids, having named the steer, aren’t too thrilled with eating him anyway. I see a couple of vegetarians in her future.
I can’t go to stores like Whole Foods or Central Markets, because we don’t have any. And if there was beef at the farmer’s market here, ranchers would be bragging about how many antibiotics they give their cattle.
So, thank goodness for the Internet! You can now find organic beef (as well as pork, chicken and other meats) online at Niman Ranch. Men’s Health magazine called it “the best of the best,” so you know you’re not dealing with a gimmick.
Beef like this really does taste better. I learned that when I lived in the country in Mexico, where all the farmers used natural methods. It wasn’t until I came back to the United States that I realized that the taste of most meat here is a bit “off”.
So now there’s hope for those of us in the boonies who want a juicy steak now and then!

No commentsPink Fuzzy Bike Makes Me Smile
No freakin’ way! This is awesome pinkness at its very best! The awesome folks at Flickr inform us that the guy is behind the site Pinkgasm, which now requires a password, and isn’t safe for work anyway. I can imagine!
This photo makes me wish Austin very much, where this bike is an awesomely cool thing. If you did this with your hair or your bike in the boondocks where I live, you would be stoned. Well, pelted with empty beer cans as you rode by, anyway. It’s sort of an anti-pink town, you might say. Well, unless the pink is on a cardigan with a strand of pearls. Nothing wrong with that either, it’s just a tad limited.
Anyway, I love love love this bike. And you’ve got to love a guy with pink spiky hair.

No commentsGet Your Account Out of the Red and into the Pink
Okay, tiny rant here. Can you believe the US government is bailing out banks while we are paying exorbitant interest rates on our credit cards? And you know what happens if you are late with a payment, or miss a payment. With fees like the ones that most banks charge consumers, there is no way that they should be needing a bailout. We are already giving them one every time we make a late payment! Actually, the interest alone really ought to sustain them.
Yesterday, my students wanted to know how much CEO’s made. I found out that the CEO of the bank that holds the mortgage on my sweet little house makes enough in one year to buy 2000 houses priced like mine every year, outright!
So if you’re as outraged about this as I am, you’ll probably want to stop giving the banks all of your money in fees and interest rates. It is definitely time to stop using credit cards unless you want to continue to support those huge salaries. Not to mention the economy is a bit iffy right now, and it is probably not a great time to be carrying a balance on five different cards.
This is where putting it all together comes in. If you do it right, you can lower your total monthly payments and get your debt paid off much faster. Now, keep in mind that this only works if you don’t then go and run up your credit cards again. Or get new ones. Then you’ll be in triple trouble. However, if you have the discipline to stick with a debt reducing plan, you should be in better shape in no time.
As for me, I’ve been credit-card free for two years now, and believe me, it is a great feeling!

No commentsThe Pinkie is Not Pink, So Why is it Called That?

As an English teacher, I love looking up the etymology of words. That is, on days when I have enough snap to be able to spell the word “etymology.” Sometimes a word just pops into my head and I wonder how the subject of that word invited that meaning. Like the word “pinkie.” Why the heck do we call our little fingers “pinkies”? People’s faces may turn pink if so inclined, but generally not their hands, so what gives?
It turns out that the word “pinkie” is derived from the Dutch word “pinkje”, which means little finger. So there.
It’s better when the word turns out to have a really bizarre origin, because then that gives me something interesting to tell my students.

No commentsFirst Date Pink: Blushes
This post is for the matchmakers among you and the
singles. I fall into the first category. Sometimes it’s fun to browse dating sites and think about who would go well together. One of the best dating sites out there is Great Expectations. A huge reason for their success is that they have been in this business for 30 years, which in these days of online dating, is like a million billion years or something. In other words, they have credibility and experience. As in, can you say background check? Current photos? They even have videos so that you know that the photo that you’ve seen of that hunk of a guy wasn’t the one time in his life that he looked good in front of a camera. I think it may be safe to say that Great Expectations may vet dates more throughly than certain presidential candidates. Sorry…couldn’t resist.
